40 students have complete Finn's mission
76 families have completed the hands only CPR course
As of this morning: Mrs. Mediger's and Mrs. Lyngstad's rooms are leading the number of students registered and "carry the torch."
There is still time to register, get involved, and for kids to earn a few prizes! Learn more at http://www2.heart.org/goto/JohnHarrisElementarySchoolSiouxFallsSD

Everybody Reads 2023 kicked off today! By the looks of it, our "Reach for the Stars" wall is going to fill up fast. Students complete a star each time (one per day) that they complete a book. Our goal is to beat the number of books we recorded last year which was 39,534!

JHE Families: We are one week into the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge!
Meet this year’s Heart Hero Team! Introducing Hearty, Breeze, Baxter, Marley, Hydro and Dream. Frankie is our tour guide and Finn is here to share Finn’s Mission again! Each heart hero will teach us how to keep our hearts and minds healthy and your student can collect them all. Download the Kids Heart Challenge mobile app to learn more, take Finn’s Mission, play fun games and go on a virtual field trip of the heart!

505 was finally able to experience their Glow Day after canceling due to several snow days!
Despite how many of us feel about the snow, there are many students who thoroughly enjoy playing in it!

4th grade had an amazing time at the University of Sioux Falls at the Water Festival yesterday. We are so grateful for the businesses and organizations from around South Dakota that helped expand our knowledge of water!

The Sioux Falls School District is excited to partner with Siouxland Libraries again for Everybody Reads! From March 13-31, students, staff, parents, and community members are being encouraged to track how many books they read. The goal is to create a community of readers ages 0 –100! Starting March 13, you will see a rocket, astronaut and a galaxy begin to appear in the library. For the next three weeks, a new star will appear in the galaxy when a book is read. Once your student(s) completes a book, they will receive a star to add to the galaxy. We look forward to a bright galaxy with billions and billions of stars!
Wondering how you can get involved as a parent? Encourage your student to read at home! As mentioned, this is a community-wide reading initiative. Anytime YOU finish a book throughout the month of March, we would encourage you to stop by your local library to add your own star to the growing galaxy and record your progress at https://www.sf.k12.sd.us/page/everybody-reads
Thank you for your support and let’s get reading!
1) Read a book and fill out a star with your name and room number.
2) To keep track, fill out the reading log and return it March 31 to the library .
3) Any book read at school, home or books read to them counts.
4) Teachers can participate, too. Fill out a star.

JHE vs Harvey Dunn 5th grade Book Battles!

This morning was the final 5th grade Harvey Dunn Elementary vs JHE Book Battle. Although they did not win, the JHE 5th graders handled the loss graciously and showed excellent sportsmanship! Congrats to both teams for their hard work and dedication!

Congratulations to Mrs. Block, speech language pathologist, on her nomination for South Dakota Special Education teacher of the year!

More pictures from last week's activities!

Last week was a big week at JHE! Read Across America brought a variety of activities/dress up days! Book Battles were a great success!

It was energizing to have future JHE kindergartners in the building for kindergarten registration. They will be the class of 2036! Can you believe it?! Thank you to the 5th grade helpers that served as "tour guides," helping point families in the right direction. They were so busy...I couldn't get pictures of all of them. We look forward to officially welcoming the new kindergartners in August of 2023!

If you have a child who will be turning 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2023, it’s time to start thinking about Kindergarten Registration! Registration opened on February 1st, and this is an opportunity to come check out your child’s new school!

Thank you for JHE PTO for providing cupcakes in recognition of the Teacher of the Year nominees and the entire JHE staff!

Save the date for the JHE Art Show! Mark your calendars!

Next week is "Read Across America" Week!
